How do you automate Amazon prices without selling below profit?
Calculate a SKU-specific minimum price from current landed cost, Amazon fees, fulfillment, advertising allowance, returns, taxes on services, and the contribution you refuse to give up. Enter that floor before starting a rule, use a limited group of representative SKUs, and judge the result on contribution and Featured Offer performance together.
Amazon Automate Pricing changes active-offer prices according to rules and ranges selected by the seller. Amazon currently supports competitive price-based, sales-based, and business-price rules, but becoming the Featured Offer is not guaranteed because inventory, fulfillment, and customer service also matter.
Create the price floor before the rule
- Use the actual sellable unit, marketplace, fulfillment method, and current fee basis for every SKU.
- Add landed product cost, fulfillment, expected returns, promotion and advertising allowances, and variable operating costs.
- Set a required contribution amount or rate instead of treating break-even as an everyday selling target.
- Model tax-inclusive pricing, percentage-based fees, currency conversion, and rounding in the same order used by the transaction.
- Date the calculation and assign a refresh trigger for fee, cost, packaging, or exchange-rate changes.
Match the rule to one business objective
Use a competitive rule when the goal is to respond within a defined relationship to a reference offer. Use a sales-based rule when you intentionally want price to react to sales volume over a period. Use a business-price rule only after the B2B discount still passes order-level economics.
Do not enroll a new launch, scarce inventory, clearance stock, and a stable bestseller under one generic rule. Their objectives and downside costs differ, so the same trigger can create opposite results.
Pilot and monitor with this checklist
- Record the starting price, minimum and optional maximum, rule type, assigned SKUs, and start time.
- Use Automate Pricing history together with Business Reports to review price changes, Featured Offer share, units, revenue, and conversion.
- Calculate contribution per order and per day after advertising, returns, and promotion effects.
- Flag repeated floor contact, unexpected price synchronization, inventory pressure, or margin below the written threshold.
- Pause, revise, or expand only after the planned observation window and a documented decision.
Handle eligibility and exceptions explicitly
Amazon currently says Automate Pricing requires a Professional selling account and an active offer. Rules can be applied individually or in bulk, and sellers can pause or modify them, but supported rule types, processing time, reference prices, and controls can vary by account and marketplace.
Exclude SKUs whose cost data is stale, whose inventory must be rationed, or whose price is constrained by legal, contractual, or channel requirements. Verify the live rule preview and current Seller Central terms immediately before starting or materially changing automation.
