Plan AWD Bulk Storage and FBA Replenishment Without Overbuying

Use demand, case packs, storage volume, replenishment timing, eligibility, and cash limits to decide how much inventory to place in AWD.

How much inventory should you send to Amazon AWD?

Send only the quantity supported by conservative demand, supplier lead time, case-pack constraints, AWD eligibility, FBA replenishment timing, and your cash limit. Amazon Warehousing and Distribution is designed for bulk storage and can replenish FBA, but lower storage cost does not make slow inventory safe to overbuy.

Separate the decision into two layers: the Prime-ready stock needed in FBA and the reserve stock held upstream in AWD. The combined days of cover should match a defined purchasing horizon rather than a supplier discount alone.

Calculate the economic order tranche

  • Expected weekly demand by SKU using conservative, base, and upside cases.
  • Supplier production, ocean or air transit, customs, AWD receiving, and FBA replenishment lead times.
  • Master-case quantity, cubic volume, pallet or carton handling, and minimum order constraints.
  • AWD inbound, storage, outbound processing, transportation, and any managed-service rates that apply.
  • Purchase deposit, freight, duties, financing cost, and the maximum cash you can leave in reserve inventory.

Set FBA and AWD control levels separately

Define an FBA target that covers demand through the next safe replenishment plus a service buffer. Define the AWD reserve as the demand you intend to bridge until the next supplier receipt, less inventory already available in FBA and in transit.

If auto-replenishment is available and enabled, monitor its output rather than assuming it eliminates forecasting. Promotions, listing suppression, demand spikes, receiving delays, and eligibility changes can still make the automated transfer different from your purchasing plan.

Complete the shipment readiness checklist

  • Confirm every SKU is currently eligible for AWD before the supplier labels or ships cartons.
  • Match carton contents, dimensions, weights, labels, master-case data, and shipment plan.
  • Record the planned AWD receipt date and the latest safe date for FBA replenishment.
  • Keep launch, seasonal, hazmat, temperature-sensitive, and short-life inventory outside the standard rule when risk differs.
  • Assign owners for receiving discrepancies, stranded units, replenishment exceptions, and aged reserve stock.

Review total cost and exit options monthly

Compare the actual cost per cubic foot, box, transfer, and sellable unit with direct-to-FBA and alternative warehouse routes. Include inventory aging and financing, then reduce future purchase tranches when sell-through falls below the original case.

Amazon's public AWD page currently states that AWD pricing covers FBA inbound placement, offers pay-as-you-go bulk storage without seasonal surcharges, and can distribute beyond Amazon.
