Prepare Amazon Commercial Liability Insurance Before the Requirement Applies

Match Amazon liability-insurance criteria, legal entity data, product coverage, certificate details, and renewal controls before a deadline.

When should an Amazon seller prepare commercial liability insurance?

For Amazon.com, begin the insurance review before monthly gross proceeds approach the current trigger or before Amazon requests proof. Amazon's US policy says sellers must obtain and maintain qualifying insurance within 30 days after exceeding USD 10,000 in gross proceeds in one month, or when Amazon otherwise requests it.

Do not wait for a notice to discover a legal-name mismatch, excluded product, unacceptable insurer, insufficient limit, or incomplete certificate. Amazon has also announced additional US requirements effective November 2, 2026 for products in categories with enhanced safety listing requirements and for certain sellers based in Mainland China, so verify whether the upcoming rule changes your preparation date.

Create an insurance requirement matrix

  • Record legal entity, trade name or DBA, business address, marketplace, seller ID, product categories, monthly gross proceeds, and any Amazon notice or deadline.
  • Inventory every listed product and identify regulated, ingestible, children's, medical, electrical, battery, cosmetic, or other safety-sensitive categories.
  • Map current policy type, occurrence or claims-made basis, per-occurrence limit, aggregate limit, deductible, exclusions, territories, and policy dates.
  • Confirm the insurer's claims capability and financial rating against the current Amazon criteria for the marketplace.
  • Assign an owner for quotation, underwriting questions, certificate submission, policy changes, claims, and renewal.

Validate the policy and certificate

For the current US policy, confirm at least USD 1 million per occurrence and in aggregate, a deductible no greater than USD 10,000, coverage for all Amazon-listed products, and the required Amazon entity named as an additional insured. The policy must also satisfy Amazon's other criteria, including legal-name matching, completion, signature, insurer capability, and notice requirements.

Compare the insured name character by character with Account Info. Resolve entity, DBA, address, and product-description differences with the insurer and Amazon before submission. Do not edit a certificate yourself or omit an exclusion that affects listed products.

Run a pre-submission and renewal checklist

  • Obtain the complete policy and signed certificate directly from the authorized provider or broker.
  • Check effective dates, limits, deductible, additional-insured wording, covered products, exclusions, legal name, and address.
  • Submit only through the current Seller Central insurance workflow shown for the account.
  • Save the submission confirmation, accepted version, reviewer response, policy number, and renewal date.
  • Set alerts far enough ahead to quote, renew, correct a certificate, and resubmit without a coverage gap.

Handle conditions and exceptions correctly

Requirements differ by marketplace, seller location, product category, applicable law, and Amazon request. An Insurance Accelerator option does not remove the need to review the actual policy, and an existing general business policy is not automatically compliant. A broker's verbal assurance is not a substitute for matching the written criteria.

Use the current [Amazon commercial liability insurance requirements](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/external/G200386300) and the account-specific Seller Central notice. For legal interpretation, coverage selection, and exclusions, consult a qualified insurance professional.
