Build an Amazon Contribution Margin Dashboard That Drives Decisions

Track the small set of sales, fee, advertising, and cost metrics that reveal whether each SKU is creating usable profit.

Start with one decision the dashboard must support

A dashboard becomes noisy when it tries to answer every question at once. Begin with a practical decision such as which SKU deserves more inventory, which campaign can absorb more spend, or which marketplace needs a price correction.

That decision determines the level of detail. A portfolio view can be monthly, while a promotion or launch view may need daily order-level data.

Use a short profit bridge

  • Net sales after discounts and customer-facing taxes.
  • Amazon selling, fulfillment, storage, and service fees.
  • Advertising and promotion costs attributed to the period.
  • Landed product cost, packaging, freight, and returns allowance.
  • Contribution profit in currency and as a percentage of net sales.

Keep totals and rates side by side

A margin rate can improve while total profit falls if volume drops. Total profit can rise while efficiency weakens if advertising or discounts grow faster than sales. Show currency values, percentages, units, and order counts together so one metric cannot hide the tradeoff.

Add thresholds that trigger action

Define a target, warning level, and hard floor for contribution margin. Review the SKUs that cross a threshold, document the likely cause, and assign one corrective action. A dashboard should shorten the distance between seeing a problem and changing a price, bid, cost, or inventory plan.
