Move Amazon Sponsored Display Into Display Ads Without Losing Your Baseline

Inventory existing Sponsored Display campaigns, preserve comparable reporting, and pilot new display ads without confusing a platform transition with a performance change.

How should you handle the Sponsored Display transition?

Treat the change as a reporting and operating migration, not as proof that the underlying campaign suddenly improved or deteriorated. Amazon Ads now describes Sponsored Display as part of its wider display ads offering in a centralized workspace. Existing campaigns can continue to run and remain accessible through Campaign Manager, while new display campaigns may use the current Display workflow.

Export the current account state before changing names, budgets, targeting, creatives, or optimization rules. A clean baseline lets the team distinguish interface and taxonomy changes from genuine shifts in reach, spend, conversion, and contribution.

Create a migration inventory before editing campaigns

  • List each campaign, ad group, advertised ASIN, marketplace, audience or product target, bid, budget, optimization setting, creative, landing page, and status.
  • Export the longest practical pre-change reporting window and record attribution settings, currency, timezone, and any unavailable or derived fields.
  • Label evergreen, seasonal, experimental, paused, and obsolete campaigns so old tests are not automatically recreated.
  • Record inventory, price, coupon, review, Buy Box or Featured Offer, and detail-page conditions that can explain performance outside advertising.
  • Assign one owner for mapping legacy names and fields to the current display workflow and one reviewer for the final budget move.

Build a comparable pilot

Choose one stable product with sufficient inventory and a reliable detail page. Keep the offer, landing destination, core audience, creative message, budget, and evaluation window as similar as the current tools allow. Change only the element the pilot is intended to test.

Compare delivery and economics at the same level of detail. Use impressions, viewable reach where available, clicks, spend, attributed orders, retained sales, returns, new-to-brand or audience signals when applicable, and contribution after advertising. Document any metric that changed definition or cannot be compared directly.

Set controls for budgets and automation

  • Start with a bounded budget and a named stop condition for spend without qualified traffic, sales, or sufficient inventory cover.
  • Do not copy historical bids automatically when the buying model, placement mix, optimization goal, or audience scope differs.
  • Keep automated rules, third-party tools, API jobs, and dashboards in observation mode until campaign identifiers and fields are verified.
  • Reconcile Ads Console totals with exported reports before reconnecting finance or profit dashboards.
  • Retain the legacy campaign record and change log even if the new campaign becomes the operating standard.

Know when to pause the migration

Pause when the account cannot reproduce the old scope, a key report field changes meaning, the product offer is unstable, an integration points to the wrong campaign object, or a broader audience would exceed the approved risk and budget. Continue the existing campaign where appropriate while the mapping is resolved instead of forcing a same-day replacement.

Names, campaign creation paths, inventory, placements, targeting, optimization controls, reporting fields, and eligibility can vary by marketplace and change over time. Use the live Ads Console and current Amazon Ads documentation as the authority for the account, and annotate the exact transition date in every performance report.
