Request More FBA Capacity Only After a Profit and Sell-Through Test

Translate an FBA capacity request into units, cash timing, reservation exposure, performance credits, sell-through, and contribution before bidding for more space.

When should you request additional FBA capacity?

Request more capacity only when the current limit blocks a documented profitable inventory plan and the expected incremental contribution can cover the reservation exposure, inbound costs, storage, markdowns, and cash risk. Capacity is not valuable by itself; value comes from units that arrive, become available, sell through, and produce retained contribution.

Use the current Capacity Monitor and Capacity Manager terms for the account. Amazon's capacity system can include on-hand inventory and open shipments in usage, while additional-capacity requests can involve a seller-specified reservation fee and performance credits tied to sales. Exact availability and terms vary.

Convert cubic volume into an ASIN plan

  • Record the current limit, current usage, open shipments, pending removals, granted requests, estimated future limits, and the specific period affected.
  • Calculate packaged cubic volume per unit from verified dimensions and convert the requested space into realistic units by ASIN.
  • Forecast sales, weeks of cover, inbound lead time, receiving delay, seasonality, advertising, return rate, and exit date for each cohort.
  • Prioritize products by incremental contribution per cubic foot, not unit margin or revenue alone.
  • Exclude speculative launches, unresolved compliance items, unstable dimensions, low-confidence demand, and stock that can remain outside FBA until needed.

Model the request economics

Build a base, downside, and upside case for granted capacity. Include product cash, freight, inbound placement, preparation, storage, advertising, returns, aged-inventory risk, removal or liquidation, reservation exposure, and the timing and eligibility of any performance credit.

Calculate the break-even units and sell-through date required to offset the request. Treat performance credits as earned only when the modeled qualifying sales occur; do not subtract the maximum possible credit from cost on day one.

Set request and monitoring controls

  • Request the smallest capacity increment that solves the documented constraint and define the maximum acceptable reservation exposure.
  • Assign capacity by ASIN and shipment instead of allowing any team to fill the grant with lower-priority inventory.
  • Track granted volume, inbound creation, shipped and received units, available inventory, sales, credits, storage, and remaining unused capacity.
  • Compare actual contribution and sell-through with the approved case weekly and stop replenishment when the downside trigger is reached.
  • Maintain an exit plan for inventory that misses the season, loses eligibility, or cannot earn the expected credit.

Use lower-risk alternatives when assumptions fail

Do not request additional capacity when the constraint can be solved through removals, aged-inventory action, better shipment timing, AWD or another storage option, supplier staging, or reallocating existing capacity. Delay the request when dimensions are inaccurate, open shipments are overstated, demand depends on an unapproved promotion, or cash cannot support the full downside case.

Capacity limits, measurement periods, eligible storage types, reservation rules, performance-credit formulas, and request timing can change. Confirm the live Capacity Monitor, Capacity Manager terms, and account-specific notifications before submitting a request.
