How do you prevent expiration-dated FBA inventory from being rejected or stranded?
Identify every product that has a shelf life or loses effectiveness over time, set the correct expiration attributes, and release only lots that meet Amazon's current remaining-shelf-life and labeling requirements at fulfillment-center check-in. Products can be expiration-dated even when no expiry date is printed on the package.
Amazon uses the expiration date entered during Send to Amazon as the date of record for inventory decisions. That makes a wrong attribute or shipment date an operational control failure, not just a label problem.
Build an ASIN and lot expiration master
- Record ASIN, SKU, product expiration type, shelf-life days, consumption period, marketplace, supplier, lot, production date, printed expiry date, and unit quantity.
- Classify products with printed expiration dates, production dates, limited shelf life, and period-after-opening symbols according to the current Amazon definitions.
- Calculate remaining shelf life at the estimated fulfillment-center check-in date, not only at supplier dispatch.
- Reserve a buffer for production delay, freight, appointment changes, receiving, and rework.
- Separate lots digitally and physically so older eligible inventory can be released before newer inventory without mixing labels or dates.
Verify unit, pack, and carton labels
Inspect a finished sellable unit and every case pack, multipack, display box, overbag, and bubble-wrapped configuration. The required date must remain visible to Amazon associates after preparation, and inner and outer dates must agree.
Use the date format and placement Amazon currently accepts for the marketplace and product type. Lot numbers alone are not a substitute where an expiration or production date is required. Preserve photos of the approved production sample and label version.
Release each shipment with a shelf-life gate
- Enter the exact lot date in Send to Amazon and reconcile it with the physical units and shipment record.
- Confirm the remaining shelf life covers consumption time plus Amazon's current additional buffer; apply category-specific rules where stated.
- Block units with illegible, conflicting, missing, relabeled, or too-short dates.
- Reconcile shipped, received, sellable, unfulfillable, removed, liquidated, and disposed units by lot.
- Monitor sell-through and stop replenishment before aging inventory creates removal, disposal, listing, or customer-safety risk.
Apply product and marketplace exceptions
Ingestibles, baby food and formula, beauty items, supplements, pet products, medical devices, bundles containing a dated component, seasonal chemicals, and products with a PAO symbol can have additional or distinct requirements. Seller-fulfilled expiration rules also differ from FBA rules.
Check the current [Amazon expiration dates on FBA products](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/external/G201003420) for the exact marketplace before production or inbound release. If supplier evidence, printed dates, Amazon attributes, and shipment dates conflict, quarantine the lot until the discrepancy is resolved.
