Amazon FBA Labeling Checklist: Prevent Receiving Delays Before Shipment

Choose the correct barcode, protect scanability, verify unit preparation, and audit cartons before inventory leaves your control.

What prevents most avoidable FBA labeling problems?

Decide which barcode Amazon should use for the SKU before labels are printed, then make every unit match that decision. Cover or remove conflicting scannable codes when an Amazon barcode is required, and verify that the chosen label remains readable after final packaging.

A carton-level check cannot fix a unit whose identity, packaging, or product-specific preparation is wrong. Audit the individual unit first and the shipping box second.

Choose the inventory identity deliberately

  • Confirm whether the SKU is eligible for manufacturer-barcode tracking or requires an Amazon barcode.
  • Match the product, condition, marketplace, and offer to the intended SKU and FNSKU.
  • Check whether a consumable, topical, restricted, used, or otherwise special product has additional barcode rules.
  • Document who prints and applies labels when a supplier, prep center, or Amazon service is involved.

Test label placement after final packaging

Place the label on a flat, accessible surface where it will not fold over an edge, sit under a seam, or become obscured by a bag or protective wrap. Print a sample, complete the full packaging process, and scan it with the same orientation a receiving operator is likely to encounter.

For poly bags, sets, fragile products, liquids, sharp items, and expiration-dated inventory, verify the current product-specific preparation and warning requirements rather than relying on a generic label checklist.

Run a two-level outbound audit

  • Unit audit: correct item, condition, quantity, barcode, prep, expiration data, and packaging integrity.
  • Carton audit: shipment contents, box labels, weight, dimensions, carrier labels, and planned destination.
  • Evidence audit: photos of representative units, sealed cartons, pallet condition when applicable, and label files used.
  • Handoff audit: carton count, carrier scan or bill of lading, shipment identifier, and exception owner.

Treat Amazon requirements as the final authority

Amazon updated its public FBA preparation, packaging, and labeling guide in July 2026, but requirements can still vary by product and marketplace. Review the current shipment workflow and Seller Central help immediately before production labels are released.

If a supplier or prep center performs the work, provide the exact current requirement and require a sample approval. Do not assume prior successful receiving proves the next shipment is compliant.
