How should you audit the FBA storage utilization surcharge?
Start with Amazon's current report and fee policy, reproduce the storage utilization inputs for the affected product group, and separate the surcharge from ordinary monthly storage and aged-inventory charges. Change replenishment only after the measured driver and eligibility are clear.
Amazon's Monthly Storage Fees report includes estimated monthly storage fees and storage-utilization surcharge information. Because rates, tiers, exclusions, and calculation periods can change, treat the report and current policy as the source of truth rather than a saved spreadsheet rate.
Reconstruct the product-level exposure
- Export product, size tier, average daily stored volume, shipped-unit volume, storage utilization ratio, surcharge rate, estimated surcharge, and charge month from the current report.
- Verify packaged dimensions and unit volume for the same FNSKU; a catalog measurement error can distort both capacity and fee analysis.
- Separate ordinary storage, storage utilization surcharge, aged inventory surcharge, inbound placement, and other FBA charges.
- Compare Amazon's product grouping and measurement period with the cohort used in your internal dashboard.
- Flag missing, duplicated, negative, or unexpectedly changed inputs before attributing the result to demand.
Find the controllable driver
Decompose exposure into inventory volume, sales velocity, inbound timing, stranded or reserved units, returns, and measurement accuracy. A bulky slow-moving SKU may need an exit or smaller reorder, while a fast seller with an inbound spike may need cadence changes rather than a price cut.
Model the next replenishment decision with the current fee estimate, stockout cost, lead-time uncertainty, storage avoided, and working-capital impact. Do not remove inventory only to reduce a ratio if the lost contribution or external handling cost is larger.
Run a monthly surcharge control
- Assign an owner to every product group above the internal alert threshold.
- Compare current and prior report inputs, not only the final fee.
- Document the chosen action: measurement case, listing repair, promotion, removal, reorder reduction, AWD path, or no change.
- Track whether the action changes both inventory volume and realized sell-through in the expected period.
- Reconcile the charged amount to settlement data and keep any Amazon credit or correction linked to the original month.
Scope and exceptions
Eligibility, product grouping, ratio calculation, rate tiers, exemptions, and AWD treatment can vary over time and by marketplace. New products, special programs, or storage types may be treated differently, and a report estimate may not equal the settled charge.
