When is a GTIN exemption the right path?
Use a GTIN exemption only when a product legitimately has no UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN, or other valid product identifier and the exact brand and product type can be supported with clear evidence. Do not use an exemption to bypass a valid identifier, a restricted brand, or an existing catalog match.
Amazon states that some brands associated with GS1 barcodes are not eligible and may require a valid product ID. Amazon may also expire an exemption. Check the current Add Products workflow and help page for the marketplace before preparing inventory or launch dates.
Create an identity evidence pack
- Photograph the product and packaging from multiple angles so the brand name and absence of a product identifier are visible.
- Use the exact same brand spelling, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation across the application, packaging, trademark records, and listing.
- Confirm the correct product type and category before applying; an approval for one combination may not support another.
- Record the manufacturer, model, variation logic, bundle composition, and any identifier used outside Amazon.
- Search the Amazon catalog first to avoid creating a duplicate detail page for a product that already exists.
Prevent common catalog conflicts
Decide whether the item is branded, generic, handmade, private label, vintage, customized, or a bundle before you submit. Changing the brand from generic to a branded value later can create a separate catalog and evidence problem.
Do not place another company's identifier on the product, reuse a UPC across different products, or assume a parent variation removes the need for accurate child-level identity. When a supplier provides an identifier, validate ownership and product matching before listing.
Submit and verify before scaling
- Use the current Add Products or bulk-upload workflow shown in the account and keep the application record and screenshots.
- After approval, create one listing with the approved brand and product type before uploading a larger catalog.
- Verify that the listing saves without identifier errors and that the detail page matches the physical product.
- Test every child variation, pack size, and marketplace separately when their identity requirements differ.
- Stop the launch if Amazon requests a valid GTIN, brand authorization, or new evidence; resolve the root mismatch instead of opening duplicate listings.
Know the exceptions and maintenance work
A GTIN exemption does not waive category approval, product compliance, brand authorization, listing-quality, or variation rules. It also does not prove that the seller owns a brand or that a product may be sold in a restricted category.
Keep the evidence pack for future catalog cases and periodically confirm that the exemption is still recognized. If the manufacturer later assigns a valid identifier or Amazon changes the workflow, follow the current official instructions rather than editing identity fields impulsively.
