What should you prepare before applying to Amazon Handmade?
Prepare clear evidence of who makes the product, how it is made, what work is performed by hand, and how the product fits an eligible Handmade classification and category. Amazon reviews applicants to maintain a maker-only store, so generic supplier images and vague manufacturing claims create avoidable gaps.
Approval does not prove the product is profitable or remove ordinary compliance duties. Build the application and the product-level operating model together before committing inventory or advertising.
Build a maker evidence pack
- Maker or collaborative-group identity and the people involved in design and production.
- Original, dated photos of materials, tools, workspace, work-in-process stages, and finished items.
- A plain-language production sequence showing which steps are handmade and which tools or partners are used.
- Product examples mapped to the current hand-altered, hand-designed, handcrafted, repurposed, or upcycled classifications.
- Category, material, safety, labeling, intellectual-property, and product-ID requirements for each planned listing.
Check capacity before promising customization or volume
Measure hands-on minutes, curing or drying time, quality-control time, packaging labor, daily output, and the longest material replenishment lead time. Use the slowest constrained step to set realistic handling times and inventory commitments.
If products are one of a kind or vary naturally, define how images, descriptions, dimensions, and substitutions will set customer expectations. A maker story cannot compensate for an offer that is difficult to reproduce reliably.
Calculate the real Handmade contribution
- Selling price less the current referral and other applicable selling fees.
- Materials, packaging, maker labor, waste, failed units, and quality-control time.
- FBA or seller-fulfilled costs, returns allowance, customization rework, and customer support.
- Photography, listing, advertising, and cross-border costs where relevant.
- Production capacity multiplied by contribution per completed unit—not revenue per order alone.
Finish the listing and account checklist after approval
Apply the correct Handmade Classification attribute, complete the maker profile, and use product images that accurately represent the shipped result. International expansion may require regional selling accounts and localized maker profiles even when Handmade approval extends across regions.
Amazon currently requires a Professional selling plan for Handmade and describes an ongoing monthly-fee waiver for approved applicants after the first month. Fees, classifications, categories, and application rules can change, so confirm the live Handmade page and Seller Central before applying or pricing products.
