How do you improve Amazon On-Time Delivery Rate?
Start with the OTDR defects report and compare the customer promise with the actual first carrier scan and delivery event for every affected seller-fulfilled package. Then fix the specific warehouse, service, or destination lane creating late deliveries.
Amazon's US policy currently requires at least 90% OTDR without promise extensions for seller-fulfilled listings. OTDR is different from confirming shipment on time: a package can meet the ship-by date and still arrive after the customer-facing delivery promise.
Create a lane-level defect map
- Record order, SKU, warehouse, order cutoff, handling time, shipping template, destination region, carrier, service, promised date, first scan, and delivery date.
- Separate warehouse-release delay, missed pickup, no acceptance scan, slow transit, weekend or holiday handling, remote-zone delay, and address exception.
- Compare each late order with on-time orders on the same lane and service.
- Measure defect count and exposure by lane instead of relying only on the account-wide percentage.
- Identify whether Amazon or the seller controlled the promise and whether any protection applied.
Reset promises from observed performance
Use realistic handling capacity, operating days, order cutoffs, transit times, and carrier coverage for each shipping template. A single national template can hide unreliable zones or services that need a longer promise or different carrier.
Where available and appropriate, evaluate automated handling time, Shipping Settings Automation, Amazon Buy Shipping, or Veeqo controls against actual performance. Do not assume enrollment alone protects every order; confirm the conditions shown for the account and service.
Run a daily release checklist
- Confirm inventory is physically available before accepting the order promise.
- Release packages before the carrier's effective pickup cutoff, not the label-print cutoff.
- Use a service whose expected transit fits the displayed delivery date.
- Escalate missed scans and weather or network disruptions before the lane repeats.
- Pause or narrow an unreliable template until evidence supports the promise again.
Separate scope, protection, and exceptions
OTDR applies to seller-fulfilled orders, not FBA. Late Shipment Rate, Valid Tracking Rate, and cancellation rate are separate metrics even when they share a root cause. Seller Fulfilled Prime and Premium Shipping can also use additional targets and protection rules.
Review the current [Amazon on-time delivery policy](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/external/GQHQGBTD7XB7EECN) and the order-specific defects report. Marketplace thresholds, promise-extension treatment, protected labels, and eligible services can change.
