Measure the sellable package, not the bare product
The final unit includes retail packaging, protective material, labels, and any preparation required for fulfillment. Prototype measurements can become inaccurate after a supplier changes a carton, insert, bottle, or sealing method.
Create a repeatable audit record
- Measure several production units with calibrated tools.
- Record length, width, height, weight, date, and packaging version.
- Photograph the measuring method for internal consistency.
- Compare the record with current marketplace and carrier data.
- Recalculate fulfillment, storage, and inbound freight after a material change.
Investigate differences before disputing them
Check whether the marketplace measured a different packaging version, compressed material differently, or used another orientation. A documented internal record makes it easier to identify whether the issue is your packaging, your data, or an external measurement.
Optimize without increasing damage risk
Reducing empty space can improve logistics economics, but insufficient protection can increase returns and product loss. Test packaging changes against both cost and damage outcomes before using them across the full inventory order.
