How do you reduce Amazon Cancellation Rate?
Download the cancellation-rate report, identify every seller-fulfilled order canceled by the seller or automatically canceled after missing confirmation, and correct the inventory or order-management failure that caused it.
Amazon's US policy calculates Cancellation Rate over a seven-day period for seller-fulfilled orders and currently requires it to remain below 2.5%. Customer-requested cancellations are excluded only when they follow Amazon's recognized cancellation process.
Create a cancellation root-cause table
- Record order ID, SKU, channel, inventory source, order time, cancellation time, cancellation initiator, reason, and report inclusion.
- Separate oversold inventory, damaged stock, wrong price, unsupported address, integration failure, missed confirmation, supplier failure, fraud review, and buyer request.
- Compare Amazon inventory with warehouse, ERP, marketplace connector, and reserved-order quantities at the time of sale.
- Identify whether the buyer used Amazon's official cancellation option or only sent an informal message.
- Assign a corrective action, owner, due date, and evidence that the same failure is blocked.
Fix inventory and order-state controls
Use one authoritative available-to-sell calculation that subtracts reservations, pending orders, damaged stock, safety stock, and channel allocations before publishing inventory. Test feed latency and failure behavior during peak volume.
Monitor unshipped and pending orders through the Seller app, Seller Central, reports, or authorized integrations. Automatic cancellation caused by missing shipment confirmation is an order-management failure even when the package physically left the warehouse.
Process cancellation requests correctly
- Use the Amazon-recognized buyer cancellation workflow shown for the order.
- Do not ask buyers to send a message as a substitute for the official request path.
- Verify whether fulfillment has begun before approving the request.
- Record partial cancellations and multiple items at the item level.
- Reconcile cancelled units back to sellable, damaged, reserved, or unavailable inventory.
Separate cancellations, refunds, and exceptions
A decision not to fulfill before shipment confirmation is a cancellation; a post-confirmation financial reversal follows refund and return processes. FBA orders, customer-initiated cancellations through recognized paths, and Premium Shipping orders can receive different metric treatment.
