How should you respond to an Amazon product safety investigation?
Read the notification, identify the exact ASIN, model, variation, lot, marketplace, incident, and deadline, and place a controlled hold on affected decisions while qualified owners assess the risk. Build one response pack that connects the physical product, listing, supply chain, test evidence, complaint, and corrective action.
Amazon may start an investigation after learning of a potential safety incident and can request information or documents within a stated timeframe. Do not wait for a listing suspension before acting, and do not assume that a compliance certificate alone resolves a product-specific incident.
Create the incident and product map
- Record notification ID, marketplace, ASIN, SKU, model, variation, batch or lot, serial range, manufacturer, importer, responsible party, and fulfillment method.
- Preserve the complaint or incident narrative, order details, reported injury or damage, product photographs, customer communication, and any returned sample.
- Map production dates, purchase orders, invoices, test samples, inspection results, inbound shipments, units sold, inventory on hand, and other complaints.
- Compare the exact live listing, labels, warnings, manual, age grading, ingredients, compatibility, and intended use with the physical product.
- Assign a safety lead, legal or regulatory reviewer where appropriate, operations owner, Amazon response owner, and executive decision maker.
Validate evidence without altering it
Collect original test reports, certificates, declarations, risk assessments, specifications, quality records, traceability data, and corrective-action records that actually cover the requested model and production scope. Verify the issuer, laboratory accreditation where required, standard, sample identity, dates, result, and expiry.
Never edit identifiers, dates, results, or scope to make a document fit. If evidence covers only a related model, state that limitation and obtain appropriate testing or professional advice through the current Amazon process.
Contain risk and answer the request
- Pause shipments, offers, advertising, or production when credible risk or the notification requires it; quarantine affected inventory and prevent relabeling or commingling.
- Investigate whether the issue is isolated, lot-specific, foreseeable misuse, listing-warning failure, manufacturing defect, packaging damage, counterfeit substitution, or broader design risk.
- Answer each requested item in order, name every attachment, and distinguish completed actions from planned actions.
- Submit through the stated Product Safety, Account Health, Manage Your Compliance, or third-party testing workflow and preserve confirmation.
- Monitor related marketplaces, customer contacts, returns, recalls, regulators, suppliers, and fulfillment inventory until the case is formally resolved.
Know when specialist action is required
Escalate immediately when there is injury, fire, ingestion, electrical, chemical, children's product, recall, regulatory-reporting, or other material hazard. This operational checklist is not legal, engineering, laboratory, or medical advice.
Follow the current [Amazon Product Safety Investigation guidance](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/external/G4QUDFLRX8GBFPVV?locale=en-US) and the case notice. Amazon states that failure to respond within the notification timeframe can lead to corrective action; the live request determines the required documents and route.
