Run Amazon Brand Tailored Promotions Without Discounting Blindly

Choose one eligible customer segment, calculate a contribution floor, prevent offer overlap, and measure incremental behavior before scaling a tailored promotion.

How should a brand test a tailored promotion?

Choose one eligible Amazon-defined customer segment and one business outcome, then calculate the lowest acceptable contribution before entering a discount. Brand Tailored Promotions can let eligible Brand Registry sellers offer selected audiences an exclusive promotion, but the value depends on whether the offer changes behavior that would not have occurred at full price.

A large reported sales total is not enough. Existing customers may have purchased anyway, and overlapping coupons, deals, advertising, or external offers can make the real discount deeper than the promotion appears.

Write the segment and economics brief

  • Name the customer segment shown in the live tool, the reason it fits the product, and the behavior the promotion should change.
  • Choose eligible ASINs with sufficient inventory, stable pricing, reliable detail pages, and a margin that can absorb the full offer stack.
  • Calculate contribution after referral and fulfillment costs, advertising, the promotion, funding, expected returns, and applicable taxes or currency effects.
  • Set a hard contribution floor, maximum redemption exposure, inventory reserve, campaign window, and stop rule.
  • Inventory every coupon, deal, business price, Subscribe & Save benefit, external offer, and automated pricing rule that could overlap.

Use a test that can answer one question

Limit the first promotion by segment, product set, duration, and economic exposure. Keep price, advertising, inventory, and detail-page changes stable where practical. If a clean holdout is unavailable, compare the result with a documented pre-promotion baseline and a similar unaffected product while acknowledging the weaker inference.

Separate reacquisition, retention, cross-sell, and high-intent conversion goals. The same redemption rate can mean different things if one promotion restores an inactive customer while another discounts an order from a frequent buyer.

Reconcile behavior and contribution

  • Track eligible audience, exposure where available, redemption, units, retained sales, contribution, returns, cancellations, and customer-service contacts.
  • Measure whether the promoted purchase leads to repeat full-price behavior, a larger basket, or useful cross-category adoption during the agreed follow-up window.
  • Compare promoted contribution with the expected contribution from customers who would have purchased without the offer.
  • Annotate stockouts, price changes, deal events, advertising spikes, seasonality, and listing changes before attributing the result to the segment.
  • Review settlement and promotion records so funded discounts, refunds, and adjustments match the campaign summary.

Respect eligibility and overlap exceptions

Do not launch when the account lacks the required Brand Registry role, the selected segment or ASIN is unavailable, the discount would breach a margin or pricing rule, inventory cannot support demand, or the offer could create an unsupported claim or unfair customer experience. Stop the campaign if overlap or redemption behavior exceeds the approved exposure.

Segments, discount controls, audience thresholds, eligible products, stacking behavior, reporting, and marketplace availability can change. Confirm the current Brand Tailored Promotions help page and the exact controls displayed in Seller Central immediately before launch rather than relying on a historical discount range or navigation path.
