When should you use FBA Donations?
Use FBA Donations when eligible overstock or returned inventory is unlikely to produce a better compliant recovery through resale, refurbishment, liquidation, removal, or supplier return, and the business is prepared to document the disposition. Treat donation as an inventory decision with financial, compliance, brand, and reporting consequences—not as an automatic cleanup step.
Amazon's March 2026 announcement describes FBA Donations as a program for eligible returned and overstock inventory and notes that account behavior can include automatic donation settings. Availability, enrollment, eligible products, terminology, certificates, and removal controls can vary by marketplace and account. Confirm the current settings and help content before relying on the program.
Classify the inventory before approving donation
- Record the ASIN, FNSKU, quantity, condition, age, cost, reason for disposition, and current eligibility status.
- Compare continued sale, markdown, Grade and Resell, liquidation, removal, supplier return, recycling, and disposal on the same time horizon.
- Exclude units that require recall, safety investigation, regulatory reporting, destruction, chain-of-custody control, or return to the rights owner.
- Check expiry, dangerous-goods, medical, food, personal-data, warranty, serial-number, and brand-channel constraints.
- Assign an owner and approval threshold for one-time and recurring donation instructions.
Model the economic and reporting impact
Compare the carrying cost and expected net recovery of each alternative with the cost, timing, and administrative effect of donation. Keep purchase cost, book value, storage avoided, removal fees, lost resale recovery, and any eligible tax treatment as separate fields.
Do not record a tax benefit based only on a donation status or estimated retail value. Amazon may provide donation records or certificates for eligible activity, but accounting and tax treatment depend on the seller's facts and jurisdiction. Send the actual documentation to the responsible adviser.
Create, monitor, and reconcile the disposition
- Capture the account setting, removal instruction, submission date, quantities, approver, and expected outcome.
- Review the Removal Order Detail Report or current equivalent for completed, cancelled, adjusted, or redirected units.
- Reconcile donated quantities with inventory adjustments, financial records, and any annual certificate or partner record.
- Investigate units that remain in inventory, accrue charges, or move to a different disposition than approved.
- Update the decision threshold when actual timing, eligibility, or avoided cost differs from the plan.
Use a separate path for sensitive exceptions
Do not use donation to bypass product-safety, recall, hazardous-material, intellectual-property, authenticity, expiry, or data-handling obligations. Quarantine sensitive units and follow the controlling policy or legal process before choosing any disposition.
If the account does not clearly show eligibility or the team cannot verify where the inventory will be recorded, use another approved path. A recurring donation cadence should be reviewed whenever the catalog, marketplace, tax treatment, or Amazon program terms change.
