Plan an Amazon Product Launch Without Losing Sight of Margin

Set a launch budget, evidence thresholds, and an exit rule before discounts and advertising begin.

Define what the launch must prove

A launch can test conversion, price acceptance, search-term fit, or operational readiness. Choose a small set of questions and connect each one to a metric. Without a learning goal, a temporary loss can continue without showing whether the product is improving.

Create three economic phases

  • Validation: small inventory and controlled spend to confirm demand and conversion.
  • Optimization: improve listing, price, targeting, and costs using observed data.
  • Scale: increase inventory and budget only after contribution economics reach the planned threshold.

Cap the acceptable launch loss

Decide the maximum total loss, loss per order, and time period you can support. Include discounts, advertising, samples, inbound freight, and any launch-specific services. Track the cumulative amount rather than reviewing each cost in isolation.

Use a stop, fix, or scale decision

At each review point, choose one action. Stop when demand or economics remain below the minimum case, fix when a clear bottleneck is measurable, and scale only when the result remains healthy under a slightly conservative scenario.
